Nursing in the Family (Cardiac Arrest) by George

Just heard a great story from my eldest daughter regarding a work colleague of hers. As you know my wife and two daughters are all nurses. Well a few days ago my daughter was arriving for work, to start a night shift, has she arrived the day sister was standing in the corridor giving some instructions as to what my daughter should be told as the night sister coming on duty.

The day sister was stood with wet hair, and damp patches spread over her uniform dress, no nylons or shoes on her feet. My sister was very puzzled and immediately thought that there was something wrong with the plumbing.

He’s what happened.

The day sister was going out after work. Has often happened the nurses would bring their glad rags with them and have a shower and change on the ward. Sister had went for her shower and was just finishing when a patient crashed and all the all-call alarms where hit. Being the senior nurse on duty she had to be there. She did the only thing she could do. She pulled on her dress over her wet body. Dashed out to the ward and started to assist the junior nurse with the resuscitation.

This meant lowering the bed and sister climbing onto it to perform cardiac massage. They worked on the patient but regrettably he died. Note due to anything to do with sister being off the ward having a shower, it was totally unexpected. It turned out that the patient who was in for some minor surgery had an heart attack.

After the hand over, and sister being now dry and dressed smartly in civvies. By daughter took over the ward and went to se the patients in the bay where the death had occurred to reassure them.

She explained that the patient had had an unexpected heart attack.

“We nearly had one of those when we saw sister” the man in the bed next to the deceased.

“Oh, that had nothing to do with it.” My daughter said going on to explain that sister was just showering and dressing when the crash happened.

“Yes, we suspected that. Obviously, she didn’t have time to put any underwear on” the man said.

My daughter thinking he was referring to the position of the main damp patches said, “I’m sure she had but the water came through any way”.

The men just laughed.

My daughter scowled at them. The men then indicated what should have been obvious making my daughter blush a bit.

Kneeling up on the bed, requires the nurses to pull up dress. To stay balanced whilst doing CPR requires you to spread your knees. This, well, shall we say that the sight seen was apparently enough to set of all the heart monitors in the world.
